Comfort food is usually high in sugars and carbohydrates and it tends to be the food we turn to when, really, we shouldn’t. Comfort foods can have a sentimental appeal to them, being easy to prepare and enjoyable to eat. For guilt-free comfort food ideas, here are five delicious recipes that are quick to prepare, taste great and have less than 500 calories.

Chicken Kiev

Serving size 4


  •  4 skinless chicken breasts
  •  20 grams of low-fat spread
  •  2 cloves of crushed garlic
  •  1 tablespoon of finely chopped chives
  •  1 tablespoon of finely chopped parsley
  •  1 egg, beaten
  •  4 tablespoons of all-purpose flour
  •  4 tablespoons of breadcrumbs
  • Salt and black pepper


  1. Preheat oven to 200 degrees C (400 degrees F). Slice through each chicken breast with a sharp knife to make a pocket.
  2. Mix together the low-fat spread, crushed garlic, chives, parsley and salt and pepper. Spoon the mixture into the pocket of each chicken breast.
  3. Dip the chicken breast into the flour, then into the egg and then into the breadcrumbs. Place the chicken on a non-stick baking tray and bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes until cooked through.
  4. Serve chicken with salad or vegetables.

Lemongrass and lime chicken kebabs

Serving size: 2


  •  600 grams of boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into cubes
  •  2 tablespoons of soy sauce
  •  1 tablespoon of honey
  •  1 lemongrass stem, finely chopped
  •  2 crushed garlic cloves
  •  2 tablespoons of fresh chopped coriander
  •  1 small chilli, finely chopped
  • Salt and black pepper

To serve

  • 250 grams of brown rice
  • 4 lime wedges


  1. Mix together the soy sauce, lemongrass, lime zest and juice, garlic, coriander and chilli in a bowl.
  2. Add the diced chicken and coat with mixture. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  3. Soak 8 wooden kebab sticks in water. Boil the rice in a saucepan of boiling water, as per packet directions.
  4. Preheat the grill to high. Thread the chicken pieces onto the wet kebab sticks. Grill for 8 to 12 minutes, turning often. Cook until the juices run clear.
  5. Drain the cooked rice and serve with the chicken kebabs, and garnish with lime wedges.
