If you can free up a little time, you can make a big impact volunteering with organizations that need your helping hands. People of all ages and walks of life are making a difference in their communities by volunteering with health and social programs, historical and educational efforts, artistic endeavors and environmental projects.

1American Cancer Society

The Reach to Recovery program pairs trained breast cancer survivors of at least one year post-treatment with newly diagnosed breast cancer patients to provide guidance and support through diagnosis, treatment and surgery.

2Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity provides affordable homes built by a volunteer workforce. Besides getting involved in the actual construction, the organization relies on people who donate time to pick up donations of building materials and furniture, and to work in the office handling paperwork and recruiting volunteer labor and supply donations.

3League of Women Voters

This group educates citizenry so they can make informed decisions when they vote. They provide dialogues and forums with government officials, study issues of public interest to inform prospective voters, and educate people to encourage them to participate in the election process.

4Ronald McDonald House

Ronald McDonald House provides a home away from home for families with children in nearby hospitals, so they can be close to the child during diagnosis and treatment. Volunteers offer a variety of services, from preparing meals and snacks to basic housekeeping. Often, the volunteers do their most valuable work by simply sitting with a family and offering support during a high-stress time.

5Community food bank

Hunger in America has reached alarming proportions, and the Community Food Bank is on the front lines of the fight. These organizations need stockers, people to prepare the food boxes for daily distribution, and volunteers to collect donations, in addition to cash and food donations. Volunteers greet the food bank clients and help them gather the goods they need to feed their families.

There's no shortage of worthwhile organizations that would be grateful for the help of additional volunteers. With just a few hours of your time every month, you can make a difference and be part of the greater good that comes with caring.
